I've been having some success/fun with a cicada 3m, max xl engine, 3 dhs, ecm, bap, and 4 mlas. Good mix of speed and fire power, just have to watch your heat. Don't stop moving and aim for their legs.

Don't forget the crab 20 with 5 MPL, maximum engine and all the heatsinks. ~125 kph and non-stop fire. Likewise the 1-x with 6 smpl, 2 flamers, biggest std engine you can put in and some heatsinks for decoration. A streak-crow killer.

I will assume you are talking about protecting intel here.. since gathering is pretty much the pirates banes playground (run, collect, hide.. run to zone)
I would stay away from cicadas honestly, apart from the x-5 they dont have the quirks to be tanky enough or the firepower to make up for it. You are giving up 15 tons of mechweight that could be used better. there are many good mechs in the 45-55t range.. (blackjack 1x, hunchback (multiple versions.. the laser+srm one is good, the ac20 is decent and the 9 smallpulse one is nasty up close) centurion CN9-D with lbx10 + whatever else you can put on it.. big xl engine for lighthunting or small standard for sluggerfights. griffin 2N with xl280 and 4x artemis srm6 (flamer in arm perhaps, depends on preference).. jumpjets and 5 tons ammo, a bit tight on ammo so aim carefully. griffin 3M also great but no ecm... has structure quirks instead, might run into slot issues depending on enginetype.
the crab, I prefer the crb-27(r) (dual ams with modules, screws with streakboats) standard engine (275 i believe i have), 5 mpl, runs a bit hot rarely gets 300+ damage but is very tanky. (and 3 of the mpl are head/ct mounted so great zombie capacity)
If your gunnery skill is good enforcer 5p with 2x ultra ac5 can be good.. (had some scout games with 500+ damage). xl255 engine (same weight as 250) 6½ tons of ammo.. shave a little armor off. does not do well against lights though... unless they are the slow dps variety like srm jenners or adders. You do need to be able to reliably hit targets at 300-400m as long as they are not concentrating on avoiding you. (damage value of the ammo in that loadout is 975 and i have had almost 700 dmg quickdrops with it.. 70%+ of the ammovalue is not bad)

i love playing my Wolverine 7K with 2 MPL, 3 A-SRM6 with 400 rounds and one flamer. It runs at i think 85 kph with an XL

The flamer is KEY... Those things are so great at dropping a clanners DPS to nothing.
